All Time Low - November 24, 2007
1. Introduce yourself and tell what you do in All Time Low.
-My name is Alex and I sing and play guitar.
2. Can you please give a little background of the band for people who might not know who you are?
-We are from Baltimore and we started when we were freshman in highschool. We did a lot of touring while on our vacations and stuff and I think because of that we managed to catch the eye of labels at a young age. So, when we graduated we had signed a record deal with Hopeless. Since then we have put out an EP and a full-length album just recently and we've been touring ever since.
3. How did you come up with your band name?
-It comes from a New Found Glory song. We were listening to the song and as we caught that line it stood out.
4. How do you deal with the good and bad of what critics have to say about All Time Low?
-The good is awesome. If you pay attention to the bad then it will bum you out too much to continue. We try not to pay too much attention to the negative criticism that we get just because we are happy doing what we're doing. There's definitely going to be people out there who don't like our music and that's fine.
5. You just put out a new record at the end of September called, "So Wrong, It's Right." How did you come up with that title?
-Actually, our producer's wife came up with it. She called me one day and said she had the name for our record and was all excited about it. She explained to me that everything we do is a little bit messed up. Like the things we say on stage are most of the time pretty inappropriate. Although we're really offensive and weird, people seem to dig it. Therefore "So Wrong, It's Right" made sense.
6. What was the recording process like compared to your previous one?
- A lot longer. This time we were working with a producer who had done some pretty big records and had a lot of knowledge under his belt. We spent a lot of time making sure that the songs were good enough to be on the record in our opinions. The whole process was just more in-dept. There was no room for error.
7. Now that your fans and other people have listened to the album and it's in stores, do you feel there's anything you wish you could've done differently?
- Yeah. I mean, I'm my own worst critic so there's always going to be things that when I look back I wish I would've done differently. To be honest, nothing huge. It's a pop-punk record and that's what we wanted to make.
8. Where did most of the inspiration for the album come from?
- Most of it comes from real life, everyday experiences. There's a couple songs on there that are ideas that I had that spiraled out of control into something a little more fictional like "Dear Maria" and "Come One, Come All." Most of the songs are directly from my life.
9. What song means the most to you off of the album?
-Probably at this point "Stay Awake." It's the last song we wrote for the record and at the time it's what I was feeling about the record- all of the pressure and making sure I didn't lose myself in all of the confusion. We're in a place where we could easily get lost and swallow it up by the popularity and attention. It's kind of a reminder to myself to not let that happen.
10. In about five years, where do you think you'll be?
-Probably prison. -laughs-
Why?
- I don't know. I just have a feeling.
11. What do you think has helped the most in the success of All Time Low?
- I think the fact that we all get along with each other really well and we make it a point to get along with our fans. We have made a connection while I don't think a lot of other bands do.
12. What do you worry about the most when it comes to getting popular?
- Like I said, losing myself and becoming a jerk.
13. Fans are wondering what the latest news on All Time Low's fanclub is?
- It's being set up right now. I saw the layout for the website which is pretty cool. We chose a name for it, and it's going to be The Hustler Club. It should be up and running pretty soon.
14. The year 2007 is coming to an end so what do you have in store for the rest of this year and the beginning of next year?
-We're taking most of December off to just go home and relax. We have a few Christmas shows here and there and we're going to shoot another music video for our next single. Once January roles around we're going to do another headlining tour with Every Avenue, Just Surrender, and Mayday Parade. Then we're going to Australia which is going to be pretty sweet and then we have a tour with Yellowcard in the US. So we're already pretty booked for next year. My life is so planned out!
15. So far this year, what's the most memorable thing that has happened as a band?
-Going to the UK was a really big thing for us because it was the first time leaving the country.
16. Do you have any idea what you want to make your New Year's Resolution?
-To stop being a mooch and stop eating everyone's food on the bus.
17. Do you have any final words?
- Thank you for doing this interview. Thank you to those who pay attention to our band, we like you!
