Interview with JB from the High Court & guest Mikey - July 2007.
1. Introduce who you are and tell what your position is in the band.
I'm JB and I sing and this is Mikey, our tour manager/party leader.
2. You're coming out with a new record July 24th called "Puppet Strings." Is there a meaning behind the title?
There's a bunch, actually. Would you like to know them?
Sure.
Alright, well first off all the songs on Puppet Strings are about growing up and becoming your own person and an adult. And I don't mean learning how to keep a job and get kids. I mean like saying goodbye to your parents rule
and getting out of school. Then there's the idea of The High Court you got to think of a name that goes along with the band.
3. What were some of your influences while writing/recording this album?
THC. [laughs.] Van Halen. There's a dirty basement that influenced us. We really like R-Kelly and Queen. We're actually coming out with an R-Kelly song tonight. [laughs.]
4. Were you under any pressure to have a certain sound on the record?
Nah.
5. What are some lyrical themes that we will be noticing?
It's all just personal stories. Ninety-eight percent of it is mostly all true. Some of it's hypothetica but true in some way or another. Sex, drugs, and bad sh*t that happens to people.
6. What song means the most to you off the record and why?
The song that means the most to me is probably 'Alien.' You have to buy the CD and found out why! I wrote a little story for each song and you have to read it so I'm not going to give it away. Overall the favorite song though is 'Down in Flames' because we get to play a lot. It's a lot of musical fun!
7. In your opinion what do you think separates The High Court from other artists out there?
We look horrible! [laughs.] Most other bands are quite good looking and people don't really pay attention to their music. We have to try and be good. We like guitar solos but we like to dance so we try and make the music move with some rock-and-roll influence to it.
8. If you could put an ideal tour together with you guys playing who would it be?
It would be Girls Girls Girls, The Hight Court, Queen and Andrew WK.
9. What's the craziest thing you've ever done on tour?
No! Skip that question please. [laughs.] You can't tell tour stories while you're home and this is definitely home.
10. If you could go back in time and change something what would you change?
I wouldn't have eaten so much food when I was a little kid. I would look much better right now. It's so much harder to lose weight when you're older and I'm fucked!
11. If you were not in a band what would you be doing with your life?
I would be in the Navy actually. Yeah, I got kicked out of the Navy for this band. Well, actually I got kicked out for smoking weed then I joined this band. I had an opportunity to stay in the Navy and rough it out but I said 'fuck it' and I stayed in the band.
12. How do you feel about the leaking of albums?
You know, bands don't make money on their CDs unless you sell like millions of records. It doesn't matter much as long as we get fans. I mean if people are downloading our record and coming to our shows thats a win situation. If they all bought CDs that'd be cool because we'd be making money but either way its good because I don't have
to work a job.
13. Is there anything you'd like to say to the people reading this?
JB and Mikey: SPRING BREAK!!! Woo!
