This interview was with Steve, the singer of Punchline. It was on July 13, 2006 via email.
1. Introduce who you are and tell what you do in the band.
Hi my name is Steve, I sing and play the electric guitar.
2. How did you come up with the name Punchline?
It was a name that fit the circumstances - we only ever got together to play some songs Chris and I had written for fun. Never really planned on making a career out of it. This was the end result of an afternoon of joking around with friends.
3. Your record "37 Everywhere" was recently released. Can you explain what the title is all about?
The number 37 is to us what the force is to Luke Skywalker. It is everywhere and has been jumping out at us and following us around for years.
4. What was the concept behind writing the new album? I've listened to previous records from Punchline and "37 Everywhere" seems to be a step up from those. Did you have any expectations when you were putting this record together?
I didn't want them to be anything more than what they were. We don't try to write a specific style - we write what we write. This album was different in that we had 40 songs to choose from. We weren't so prepared with the last album, we only had about 15 songs for Action. Not even.
5. What's your favorite song on the record and why?
My favorite song is Caller 10. It tells the story of 2 people that were destined to meet, but were so tied up in work and school that they walked right by eachother. The story means a lot to me because I think it happens everyday. We all need to keep our eyes open.
6. Coming out of Pittsburgh, PA. You guys seem to have a lot of fans all over the world, including Japan. Are you amazed with how many people love and support your band?
Haha, yes. We all grew up in a very small town called Belle Vernon, which is 40 minutes south of Pittsburgh. Not a whole lot comes out of Belle Vernon, I'm quite excited to be seeing the world from our hard work and determination.
7. You are currently on tour with Bowling For Soup. What's that like? Any crazy stories so far?
This tour is so much fun. We were nervous coming on to the tour for how long it is - 10 weeks. The usual tour for us is about a month long. Bowling for Soup is really taking care of us. We've been going out on stage during their set and finishing their song "Ohio", which is my favorite of their songs.
8. If I am correct, you guys have been opening for a lot bands over the past few years. Do you have any plans to headline your own tour soon? If so, what bands do you want to bring along with you?
We've headlined 2 full US tours in the last year and plan on doing another one at the end of this year. I don't know who we're bringing, we had The Audition, Valencia, and New Atlantic on the last one and I must say it was amazing.
9. In your opinion, what's the best thing about touring?
Playing music for people that want to hear it.
10. Fueled by ramen has a lot of incredible and talented bands on their label. How did it feel getting signed to them?
We always said we'd wait to sign until labels came to us. I'm glad how things worked out with FBR, I love those dudes and dudettes.
11. What's your favorite band on FBR and why?
Less Than Jake - they are the reason FBR exists and took us under their wing when we signed.
12. Do you have any influences that have inspired you to be a musician and/or stay positive in life?
Nice people influence me to be a nice and positive person. Negative people also influence me to be a nice person. Music inspires me on a whole different level, I hear music in everything. Its pretty sweet.
13. You see fans every night on tour singing your songs back to you. That has to be one of the best feelings, right?
Yep. It most definitely is. I'm amazed to see what comes out of writing songs on my couch at home.
14. Thinking back to when you first started out as a band, is there anything you would have done different?
There is nothing I would have done different. I love this and wouldn't trade it for anything.
15. Alright, well I think this pretty much wraps everything up, is there anything you'd like to say to Punchline fans reading this?
We have over 50 songs in the works. Stay tuned. Thanks for everything.
I have to thank Steve for taking some time from the tour to answer these questions. Now, everyone should go support Punchline because they are amazing.
