April 29th, 2007 @ TLA Philadelphia
1. Introduce who you are and tell what you do in the band.
TP: I'm Ryan and I play drums. I'm David and I play bass.
2. Where did you come up with the name "This Providence?"
Ryan:Originally our band was called "Sundays Best" and there was a band in California that had that name and they threatened to take legal action if we didn't change it. So we asked our fans to submit options and we got one that had the word "providence" in it and we liked it because of the meaning of the word. So we just took that and added the word "This" to personalize it.
3. What's your favorite thing about being on the road?
David:Growth, I guess. You learn a lot on the road and you meet a lot of people and see a lot of things and I think that helps you grow as a person.
4. What's the craziest thing you have ever seen or done while being on tour?
Ryan:Oh jeez. A lot of homeless people dance and we like to watch them sometimes.
David: You meet a lot of crazy people whether it's at a mall or a show, or just walking down the road like we did today.
5. Who's the messiest member of the band?
Ryan: Probably David. (Laughs). We always find clothes in the van or on the floor of the trailer. I mean everyone's messy when you've got eight guys in one van. It's hard not to get trash everywhere, but I don't know I think David's the messiest and everyone would probably agree.
David: It's not my fault! (Laughs) Okay, yeah it is.
6. If you could tour or play a show with anyone in the world, whether they are dead or alive who would it be?
David: Third Eye Blind. Jimmy Eat World or someone huge like Aerosmith.
Ryan: U2. Backstreet Boys.
David: Nsync!
7. Out of all of your songs which means the most to you?
David : Oh, thats hard. None of us wrote the lyrics. For me, I like the message in our song "Losing Control" the most. It talks about finding truth and what you really believe in and I think thats really important for everyone.
8. If your music could be a soundtrack to any film what would it be?
David:
We were actually just on the soundtrack of a movie called Ninja Turtles. It wasn't the greatest movie, but I don't know...
Ryan:
The movie sucked, but I love Ninja Turtles.
9. What are the chances that you will rerecord your EP "Our Worlds Divorce?"
Ryan:
Probably not. That cd came out in 2004 and it was on a small little indy label from Seattle called Rocket Star, and we don't even own the rights to it right now. We're in the process of getting those right now. So maybe one day we can rerelease it but we wouldn't really ever rerecord it. We wouldn't rerecord it for one, half the people on that CD aren't even in the band anymore and two, it was three years ago and that's not really where we are anymore as musicians.
10. What or who are some of your influences?
Ryan:
We have a lot. Everyone listens to a lot of different music. I know for Gab, because he's the main song writer, he writes all the music, when he was writing the album he drew a lot from Saves the Day, the Beatles, The Getup Kids, The Faint. And then there's a lot of Seattle bands that we grew up listening to.
11. Do you feel any pressure as your fanbase begins to grow?
David:
I feel like it's the opposite. Usually when we're smaller it feels like more pressure to get the fans and stuff, in my case it's what I think.
12. What is the biggest risk you have ever taken?
Ryan:
I think touring and being in this band. I know for me, I quit my job and dropped out of college and sacrificed having a normal place to live and pretty much being a bum because we don't make very much money and we don't always eat the best food or have a bed to sleep in. It's not like you're gauranteed that people will like your band and buy your CD. So being in a band is a really big risk.
13. Are you writing any new material at the moment?
David:
We are going to start writing hopefully by the end of summer.
Ryan:
We have a little break after this tour, we're going to be home for a bout 3 weeks. We're going to try shooting a music video in that time and start writing. We'd like to be able to have enough stuff to go into the studio by the end of the summer. But that's not really our focus right now. Our focus is just touring and pushing the CD we have out now. If we have time to write-cool. If we don't, it's not the end of the world.
14. If you could go back and do something different-whether is has to do with the band or not, what would it be?
Ryan:
I probably would have kept playing piano. My mom is a piano teacher and I took piano lessons when I was little and then once my Dad bought me drums I said piano is stupid, I want to play drums. Not just from this band, but all of my musical experience whether it was playing at church or my school or whatnot, it helps with being able to read music. And songwriting, I wish I could write music but I don't know how to play chords, I just know how to play beats on the drumset. So I wish I had more knowledge in that area.
15. Is there anything you would like to say to your fans or anyone else reading this?
David:
Pick up our CD please and wear earplugs and drink water at shows.
Ryan:
Yeah definitely drink lots of water. We don't want people passing out!
